I saw this thing in Scottsdale while looking for a hiking trail, wtf is it? Looks like some kind of HMMWV prototype or replica? But it was in a pretty nice neighborhood so they probably could have afforded a real hummer if they'd wanted one.

Maybe a homemade H1? I know it's not the Chinese copy of the Hummer, but maybe someone wanted to make their own and customized it?

It's very peculiar, I've never seen anything like it...I know it's not the HMMWV or H1 prototype...if it's a replica it's a terrible and cheap one

I am intrigued.

Most likely some sort of armoured body on an HMMWV chassis.

OP here to add some things,

I don't think it's armored, the door hinges aren't very big, and I'd think they'd have to be if it had any kind of serious armor on it.

And it isn't a HMMWV chassis, it has a solid front axle with leaf springs, if you look at the front bumper you can see the ends.

And what purpose would the huge loops on the roof serve? On real HMMWV's they have hooks so they can be picked up by helicopter and such, but why would they put them on this thing?

The front "badge" looks like it says VR?

Those are military tires however, but they're pretty cheap on the surplus market.

Maybe its an HMMWV replacement prototype?
Maybe its a protype that never made it?
Maybe someone got really, really bored and had way too much free time?

You should check in on that "VR" or whatever the script says on the grill.

It's probably a kit car built on a truck or SUV chassis (lolol they're the same).

A quick googling of "vr kit car" shows a company called VR Engineering that makes kit cars. No mention of HMMWV knockoffs, though.

you guys are giving this way too much thought. It's a crappy hummer kit, it's quite popular in the 4x4 world, they'll fit almost any chassis and there are a number of kit manufacturers.

on most armored trucks they got eyelets on the roof to install and remove the armored cab with a crane.

the running board looks like something off a pickup truck.

could be a pickup truck someone modified to look like an uparmored HMMWV.

This doesn't look like any of the H1 kits I've seen on the internet or elsewhere, or any that I just searched for.

VR engineering does make kit cars however, and their HQ is in Scottsdale, so maybe its a prototype kit car?

Whatever it is, it looks cheap as shit...it reminds me of those plastic/rubber garbage cans with the way it's put together.

Absolutely awful.

If it's the one I think it is, it's built on a common 'burb chassis.

There have been loads of HMMWV kits offered. Most are pretty silly when you see what they are stuck on.

I WAS excited thinking it was possibly one of those concept-designs tested before deciding upon the one from American Motors General in 1982, but it ain't in these records.

OPERATOR must be right, some kind of kit or shop-made conversion. I am am somewhat disappoint, though the poor imitation is just hilarious.

Who knows? It could be a prop from a movie.
