Ok guys, I feel a bit stupid asking this but what size of bore brush do I use for a .223 rifle? Hoppes has them for .22 then steps up in size to the .243/.25 cal.

And what about the "tornado" type brushes? Any real benefit? How about swabs and nylong brushes? Pros & cons?

Use a .22, unless you find a dedicated "5.56mm" brush. It will be the same diameter but slightly longer.

Stainless Tornado brushes are good for occasional metal fouling removal when using a product like Sweet's 7,62 or a similar copper/jacket fouling remover.

Nylon brushes are fine for range cleaning and general cleaning.

Thanks Meplat. I picked up both a bronze and nylon brush. I wasn't sure about the tornado brush and on the Hoppes site it mentions that it prevents scratching on the barrel surface.. ?? I wondered if that was just a sales gimmick or if there really was a legit concern about barrel damage.

Thanks for the advice. Have a merry christmas!

Those stainless tornado brushes are FANTASTIC in shotguns. They really get plastic and lead fouling out and won't scratch the bore.

I wont tell you all what I used in my last shotgun to get a mirror bore. Kind of expensive, and most would shit masonry.

But when I sold it? The buyer thought it was chrome plated, even when I said it wasnt.

Shiniest Mod 1100 Remmy bore in the whole show I guess.

Hmmm..... to make it super super shiny...

Electric drill, tight cotton bore mops, and lots of JB paste.

Might even consider one of those FlexHone tools.

No. I have a large ingersoll-rand compressor, anyhow.

Oh, jesus. Anything air-powered is going to put a RIDICULOUS shine on something due to speed.

I'd be careful with anything that fast.

Polishing is in fact removing tiny quantities of metal, and if you're removing tiny quantities of metal, however tiny they may be, once you do it with a tool going 30kRPM, it adds up.

What the fuck, I'm posting gun warning to MEPLAT?

Just ignore this post.

I guess it's for other operators with airtools that want to mirror finish their guns. Seriously guys, careful.

The air tool I used, never exceeded 400 RPM, til final finish, when I used a turbine type die grinder for a very light final finish.

Again, the flail hone was very close, yet so far off.

I just picked up a boresnake when I got my AR, but I'm now realizing I should probably get something to clean the chamber. Will they sell brush heads that are listed as chamber brushes or do I just get something that is a bigger size?

You can pick up actual AR chamber brushes (shaped like a bolt face) so you can clean it out. toothbrushes work also.

link related, even though I can't find what I have, which are little white disposable fiber pads that are shaped like a bolt so it locks in and you can scrub by rotation.

as a second thought, make sure you pick up a rod and a cleaning kit. A boresnake is good for quick on-the-range cleaning but you need a solid rod with multiple tips to make sure you get clean.

Now that's what I call targeted advertising!

OP, there's your answer, you should hone your bore to a delicious cross-hatch consistency.
