I found it! This is a blurb from a writing class I took in 10th grade:


A solitary piece of dolomite languishes patiently in the noonday sun. Baked by millennia of Sol’s harsh radiation, its dull ochre hue extends into the sand around it; sand that once composed the bed of an ancient sea, but now lies desiccated and cracked in a jagged pattern. Slowly the vicious sun retreats from its high ground, permitting an inky shadow to slither into life from beneath its rocky shelter. The stone continues to sit well into the dark hours, innocently watching as tiny points of light swirl in timeless dance above. When the time is right, it begins its journey. A few cautious inches at first, the rock creeps westward, gaining speed and confidence as it moves inexorably towards the horizon. Pausing at the first glimmer of light in the east, it continues but a few feet before settling down. Soon a red-gold face can be seen in the east, but the rock is already sitting innocently, looking forward to the evening as it dares the sun to make a comment.
